This program fosters immersion in Akron Children's culture and aims to inspire participants to pursue RN positions upon graduation.

Unit Overview: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) delivers critical care to infants, children, and young adults with life-threatening medical or surgical conditions. Patients often require advanced life support, complex medication management, and close monitoring. PICU nurses are integral in managing rapidly changing patient conditions while partnering closely with multidisciplinary teams and families during high-stress situations.

Summary:

The Nurse Technician provides individualized care for a group of patients and supports patient and family education under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Through our Nurse Technician Program, nursing students gain practical experience under the guidance of registered nurses, fostering immersion in Akron Children's culture and inspiring participants to pursue RN roles upon graduation.

Commitment to Program:

· Complete general nursing orientation and role-specific training/classes, which may require full-time, day-shift hours.

· Work part-time to full-time hours alongside your preceptor, with a minimum commitment of 24 hours/week during the program.

· Be immersed in the patient population and diagnoses specific to your practice setting while learning nurse technician roles and responsibilities.  

Responsibilities:

1. Assists in delivering individual care for a group of patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse.

2. Assists in patient/family education capabilities and under the direction of a licensed nurse.

3. Contributes to the assessment of individual patient care.

4. Contributes to the delivery of patient care.

5. Participates in the educational efforts of the department and the nursing unit.

6. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age and developmental status.

7. Other duties as required.

Technical Expertise

1. Nursing students entering the final year of an accredited nursing program.

Education and Experience

1. Education: Must be enrolled in an accredited baccalaureate or associate registered nursing degree program.

2. Certification: Current Health Care Provider BLS training from the American Heart Association is required.

3. Years of relevant experience: Must have completed at least one clinical rotation.

4. Years of supervisory experience: None
