The Miami VA Healthcare System's Infection Control and Occupational Health programs are looking for an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) to expand access to those programs at the Bill King VA Clinic in Sunrise, Florida. The incumbent will report to the ACOS/Hospital Epidemiology and Occupational Health and will work in collaboration with Human Resources, Workman Compensation, Safety, Nursing, Service Chiefs and Executive Leadership. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Additional Requirements for Nurse Practitioners Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The applicant must be certified Family Health, Adult Health, or Gerontology. Preferred Experience: 1 year Occupational Health or Infection Control BLS Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The Occupational Health/Infection Control Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed independent practitioner who is responsible for managing health problems and coordinating health care, is a registered nurse who has completed a master's or doctoral degree in the diagnosis and management of clinical conditions for specific population foci. The APRN (NP) provides a broad range of acute and chronic healthcare and must be certified to perform the responsibilities in the area of assigned practice and is responsible for the management and evaluation of patients under his or her specialty. The NP assigned to this position must complete a mandatory course and be satisfactorily oriented in infection control and occupational health policies and practice. Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team. Professionalism: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, and understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients, their profession. Systems-Based Practice: Practitioners are expected to demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided, and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve optimizing health care. The position will be approximately 50% Occupational Health and 50% Infection Control. Other duties for the Occupational Health Office NP typically include, but are not limited to: Pre-employment and courtesy physical examinations performed to ensure appropriate clearance for job placement. This could include consultation regarding work practice modifications that might allow employees with special needs to handle all the \"essential functions\" of their assigned positions. Periodic/annual medical surveillance examinations for employees who are listed on medical surveillance programs as determined by the Miami Safety department in conjunction with the employee's acting supervisor/manager as mandated by OSHA. Evaluation/Treatment of Workers' Compensation injury or illness including work related dental conditions if necessary. Assessment of minor injury or illness for non-job-related injury or illness. These treatments are not intended to provide full medical care but only to assist in relieving discomfort and enabling the employee to remain at work. If additional treatment is required, the employee will be referred to a suitable provider. Return to work exams. Fitness for duty exams may be performed only at the written authorization from Human Resources personnel. Evaluation, treatment and prevention care for documented work related communicable exposures (for example chickenpox, scabies, and blood/body fluid exposures). For infection or communicable disease, the employee may be referred by his/her supervisor to Occupational Health to assist in determining whether the employee is able to return to duty and if any restrictions must be imposed. Review and approval of all claim submissions and progress notes to the Department of Labor on workman's compensation and case management cases. Provide review and approval or disapproval of all disability /permanent impairment ratings. Review all open workmen's compensation cases on a continuous basis to ensure appropriateness. Administration of the Work-Place Free Federal Program for the Miami VA Healthcare System by coordinating and reviewing all pre-employment and random urine drug testing processes and results. Other duties for the Infection Control NP typically include, but are not limited to: Environment of Care monitoring. SPS tracers. Hand hygiene monitoring.
