The Director of Staff Education for Long Term Care is responsible for providing direction and coordination of staff development and education for Schervier Pavilion. The Director works collaboratively with Director of Nursing as well as Nurse Managers to develop, plan, implement, and evaluate orientation, education, competency assessment, and professional practice. This position contributes to the development of the policies, procedures, and job descriptions/performance standards for all departments and contributes to the development of standards and educational programs to assure compliance with state and national regulatory bodies. The Director functions as the liaison with affiliating schools by coordinating orientation and clinical experiences.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops, plans, implements, and evaluates staff development programs for Schervier Pavilion.
- Develops and utilizes competency validation documents/tools for all facilities.
- Assures core competence of staff upon hire and on an on-going basis.
- Performs needs analysis based on employee competency, resident outcomes, surveys, facility quality indicators, federal and state regulations, and changes in evidence based practice standards.
- Coordinates orientation for all staff members, and monitors new hires and preceptors during the probation period.
- Acts as a resource in clinical care management of residents.
- Provides clinical supervision of nursing staff through monitoring of clinical documentation and on unit mentoring/modeling of behavior.
- Collaborates with leadership and staff to identify competence deficiencies, and develops and implements needed programs to increase skills and knowledge of clinical staff.
- Evaluates and reports effectiveness of education programs to the QAPI team.
- Maintains annual education calendar to meet regulatory requirements for all staff, and reports compliance quarterly to the QAPI team.
- Ensures all mandatory in-services are provided to staff members, maintains state mandated education requirements, tracks to ensure attendance, provides feedback to Directors, and reports out to the QAPI committee on Education Compliance for follow-up.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude when managing staff issues, and assumes a leadership role in resolving issues or researching questions.
- Utilizes adult learning theory and utilizes methods, measurements and tools to evaluate achievement of learning goals.
- Develops and enforces policies and procedures in accordance with OSHA, state and federal requirements, and regulatory requirements.
- Serves as a consultant for staff in areas of program development, clinical practice and professional development.
- Develops and/or assists in development of educational programs, presentations and/or patient education materials to support department goals, and recommends modifications as appropriate.
- Selects and organizes teaching aides to include films, slides, charts and nursing supplies and equipment to demonstrate improved methods of resident care; maintain required departmental records, reports and statistics as appropriate.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in training techniques, methods and programs for possible application by education.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Five years clinical nursing experience in long term care facility; two years experience as a clinical nursing educator preferred. Currently licensed as a RN in the state of New York. National Certification in Nursing Education/Staff Development is desirable. BCLS certification preferred.
EDUCATION:
Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing, Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related field preferred.
OTHER:
Excellent ability to teach using innovative and creative techniques in adult program development and offerings. Ability to perform effective learning needs assessments and evaluations. The individual performing this job may reasonably anticipate coming into contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
