Under the direction of the primary or associate nurse, the Nursing Assistant (NA) in the Acute Psychiatry Inpatient Unit within the Mental Health and Neurosciences Division (MHND) performs a variety of routine patient care techniques based on the needs of the unit. The incumbent provides care to psychiatric patients, as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, following the nursing care plan. All duties performed will be completed with appropriate training and competencies for assigned task. These include but are not limited to the following: Utilizes glucose monitoring machine appropriately to collect and document appropriate glucose readings for assigned Veterans Maintains a positive therapeutic relationships by displaying respect for human dignity with patients, families and/or significant others utilizing learned communication skills Utilizes observation skills for data collection, reporting and recording patient/resident observations Performs aspects of nursing care to meet patient's needs for the following: Personal Hygiene Physical comfort Activity, Exercise, Rest Nutrition Elimination Prevention of Skin Breakdown Rehabilitative Aspects of Care Learn to utilize principles of proper body mechanics while caring for patients Reports patient observations to the RN and or other members of the treatment team Trained to set up patient care related equipment Organizes and obtain routine supplies and equipment Assists with orienting patient/family to unit routines and policies Works as a cooperative, courteous member of the interdisciplinary team Safeguards patient's right to privacy by judiciously protecting information of a confidential nature Uses proper safety practices Communicates effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals. Utilizes equipment and supplies according to procedures Utilizes principles of proper body mechanics and follows procedures for use of patient care equipment to prevent injury to self or others in all settings such as utilization of lifting equipment Work Schedule: Full Time - Six 12hrs shifts + One 8hr shift = 80hrs per Pay Period.
