The staff nurse is a registered nurse responsible for continuous delivery of patient care. This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. Makes caring for the Veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work. Self-motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards Demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning. Duties include but are not limited to:- Assesses patient's bio psychosocial needs:- Completes and documents nursing assessments seeking assistance to identify priority needs.- Reassesses on a continuum, recognizing changes in patient's needs.- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patients served and interprets information to identify each patient's individual needs.- Develops the initial nursing plan of care and updates plan with assistance as needed.- Displays beginning ability to include patient's family in establishing goals and the plan of care.- Addresses patient safety needs, following National Patient Safety Goals when communicating patient care needs to other nursing staff and disciplines.- Assesses patient's learning needs, learning preference and readiness to learn. Implements nursing interventions/orders and physician's orders in a timely and complete manner, requesting assistance when needed.- Initiates and documents basic health teaching and discharge planning based on patient's/family's identified needs.- Orients patient to the unit and surroundings i.e., call light system, restrooms.- Safely and effectively uses equipment required for patient care.- Recognizes overt abnormal signs and symptoms or changes in patient's needs.- Documents care given in the medical records in a consistent, accurate, concise and timely manner.- Evaluates and documents patient response to interventions and progress towards attainment of goals/expected outcomes.- Revises plan of care according to evaluations.
